The Best Beauty Advice I’ve Received

Today’s post is a little different but still beauty related because that’s how we do it on this platform. I read so many beauty articles and other beauty bloggers posts on the daily and must say that I learn quite a bit.

I figured I’d share some of the best beauty advice I’ve received from my mom, mom in law, other females and obviously some interesting articles I’ve read.

I’ll list them below in no particular order but the very first one listed is of utmost importance. I can’t stress that enough

 

Protect Your Skin – Sunscreen

Not only does sunscreen prevent skin cancer by protecting you from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays but it also helps prevent discolourations and dark spots. I use the Nivea SPF 50 spray for my body when I’m out in the sun and the Eucerin spf50 oil control sun gel cream for my face.

 

Start a skincare regimen from a young age

No matter your age, gender, or ethnicity, your skin needs gentle cleansing, exfoliation, hydration, year-round protection from UV light, and antioxidants, replenishing ingredients, and restoring ingredients

You should start a skincare routine as soon as possible. Age doesn’t matter; age is not a skin type. If you have teenage girls, get them started with a gentle skincare regimen and please make sure all the kids use SPF daily. I can’t stress this enough. I’ve shared my Skincare routine over HERE.

 

Stay Hydrated –  Beautiful Skin comes from within

Not only does your body depend on water for survival but your skin does so too. Our skin is the largest organ and without efficient water intake, it will certainly not function properly or at its best. Dehydrated skin has less resilience and is more prone to wrinkling. Drinking enough water = a radiant, healthy, younger-looking complexion. So how much water should you get in? Some say 8 glasses, others say 2 litres but it actually depends on what you weigh on how active you are. Google it! I drink between 3.5 – 4L a day and my skin loves me for it.

 

Stop touching your face!

OUR hands are grubby! I feel so anxious when I see someone touching their face. You’re essentially transferring dirt and bacteria from your hands to your face, which can lead to clogged pores and breakouts.

 

Always wash makeup off!

This is another BIG ONE! And I’m sure you’ve heard this countless times. Sleeping with makeup is the worst thing for one’s skin. I copied the below from an article I read.

“Sleeping in your makeup can result in unnecessary exposure to the free radicals in the environment, which the makeup holds on to,” says Dr. Schweiger. “Free radicals cause the breakdown of healthy collagen, which results in fine lines on the skin. Additionally, makeup can clog the pores while you sleep, resulting in the development of acne.”

“During the day you accumulate a lot of oxidative stress,” says Dr. Gilbert. “When you sleep in your makeup you are not giving your skin a chance to recover from those insults, which can lead to premature ageing.” Schweiger concurs, noting that “free radicals from the environment (often in the form of pollution) remain on the skin when you do not clean your face properly at night. Free radicals cause collagen breakdown over time, which results in the development of fine lines and prematurely aged skin.”

“Foundations and thick, oil-based primers are often the worst offenders,” says Dr. Gilbert. “They prevent the skin from renewing itself naturally at night, causing blackheads, acne and dullness.”

 

Don’t pop it!

It’s so tempting to pop that zit. I’ve been guilty of this and I promised myself to never do it again. Squeezing it won’t get rid of the problem and in most cases, it just worsens it, causing more inflammation and leaving it exposed to bacteria.

 

Exfoliate your face, lips and body

Exfoliating removes all dry/dead skin cells on the surface of the skin and is one of the most important aspects of your skincare routine. I mentioned this in my current skincare post over HERE. If we exfoliate our faces at least twice a week then surely we should also exfoliate our lips as well as our bodies. I’m loving the Lush scrub scrub scrub as a body exfoliator.

 

Use Dry Shampoo

How often you wash hair depends on your hair type, scalp texture, how oily your hair gets, and personal preference. On the other hand, too-frequent washing can cause damaged hair and a dry, itchy scalp.

Here are some benefits to why you should dry shampoo.

  1. Less shampoo equals healthier hair
  2. Dry shampoo helps regulate oil production
  3. Dry shampoo is convenient and saves time and is travel-friendly
  4. Dry shampoo adds volume and texture to your hair
  5. Dry shampoo allows you to be more active without having to wash your hair

Moisturizer! Moisturize! Moisturize!

Lather that moisturiser beauties. I moisturise twice a day. This is the key to soft, supple skin and who doesn’t want this all year round? I don’t just slap it on, well unless I’m in a hurry. I try and massage the skin. Massaging your skin improves the lymphatic system of your body, improves blood and nutrition circulation within your skin and is helpful for the prevention of fat deposition.

 

Keep things clean

Bacteria! Bacteria! Bacteria!

Need I say more?

Your makeup tools, eg brushes, sponges, makeup clothes etc need to be washed regularly.

 

The best defence against oily skin is using face oils

Our bodies produce oils naturally to keep things balanced. Those of us with oily skin obviously have overactive oil glands. Facial oils are totally worth the hype and they’re not just meant for dry skin. If you’re an oily girl, try to go for a lightweight oil like Jojoba, tea tree, squalane or rosehip oil.

 

Purple shampoo saves blonde lives

I’m a brunette and I’ve had dark hair most of my life. I’ve had some highlights here and there but that’s about it. I recently decided to try something different and go all in with going blonde. My hairstylist recommended purple shampoo to maintain the blonde. I can’t tell you how amazing this stuff is for blonde hair. It leaves the hair looking brighter with all the brassy tones practically gone. It’s a must for blondes

 

Apply eye cream with your ring finger

The skin tissue around the eyes is so delicate and one of the first areas that show the signs of ageing. It’s been proven that the ring finger is the weakest fingers but then again it’s also about how you use this finger. The general rule is to be gentle, don’t put too much pressure or tug the skin. Gentle tapping motions is the way to go.

 

Use retinol to Increase collagen production

Retinol is what gives the skin structure, firmness and elasticity. I learnt the importance of this when I turned 30. This ingredient stimulates the production of new blood vessels in the skin, which improves skin, fades dark spots and reduces fine line and wrinkles. It’s worth it to invest in good retinol. Be gentle on your face

I cringe at the way some people handle their faces. Don’t be aggressive when washing your face, rather massage the product in for a minute or so or double cleanse if you feel your skin isn’t clean enough. The best way is by using your fingertips and gently apply products in an upward motion to get the circulation going.

 

Every girl needs a red lipstick

 

Ok, maybe not every girl especially if you don’t wear makeup or bold lipsticks in general. Wearing red lipstick makes you feel like you can run the world. It just boosts one’s confidence.

 

Don’t forget your neck

I often see people applying all the face products but skipping the jaw and neck area. The neck tissue (like the eye tissue) is more delicate and is often an area that shows the early signs of ageing. The envelope of neck skin is smoother, thinner and more translucent than over much of the body. Apply your sunscreen in this area and make sure it’s well moisturized and rosehip oil in the evenings.

 

Lip balm is a need

Lip balms containing ingredients like phenol, menthol and salicylic acid — make the lips drier. You have to apply more, and it becomes a vicious cycle. So try and check the ingredient list and avoid the above mentioned. Lastly, use a lip balm that’s at least SPF30, seeing as your continuously applying this, you might as well do this knowing that you’re protecting the skin. I use the Eucerin Intensive Lip balm at night before bed.

 

Makeup is an expression

Women are often shamed for what is and isn’t beautiful. I read somewhere that “makeup can be viewed as both a form of self-expression and a confidence booster” and I couldn’t agree more. Makeup is a celebration of oneself and something so personal. I love makeup, from buying it to applying it, to how it makes me feel. I find it therapeutic.

Makeup is not a requirement, but neither is going bare. Do what makes you happy.

Ever hear?

“You look so much prettier without makeup!”

” I prefer a person with a natural face.”

“They try-hard and put too much effort into their appearance. Why not go for the more natural look?”

I’ve heard some people say some really silly things about those who choose to wear makeup and my only thought around this, is why does it bother you so much? Bizarre, I tell you.

 

Smile.. it brightens up your whole face

 

All it takes is a smile to look healthier, and the more you do it, the healthier you’ll likely be, it’s actually been proven.

A smile really is the best accessory and the first thing people see and a great way to make a first impression!

Sooo… Smile more often!
