The Naked Edition : Urban Decay Naked Basics 2

Hey Stunners
So I’ve been meaning to do a review on my Urban Decay eyeshadow palette collection but have been procrastinating quite a bit. Don’t ask me why, lol! So what I’ve decided to do is to review one palette every week for the next 3 weeks and call it the “Naked Edition”. I must tell you though, when I mentioned this heading to my fiance, he freaked out just a little. (HandsOverEyes). He didn’t know that it would feature my Urban Decay Palette Collection and asked: “Yolanda Scharneck, what on earth will you be writing about with that heading?” You know I’m in trouble when he says my full name, haha! I had such a good laugh and to think he bought two of these palettes as a surprise gift when Urban Decay just launched.
Today I will be reviewing the Naked Basics 2. It the smallest one I own so I figured I’d break the ice with this one.

So like I’ve mentioned above, my fiance surprised me with a few Urban Decay goodies when they launched in SA last year! I’m sure many of you can imagine how ecstatic I was. He walked in from work one day and told me to close my eyes and when I opened them I had 3 gorgeous Urban Decay products in my hands and a few extra samples. I was on top of the world. Am I not just the luckiest lady alive? Blessed is what I always say!
Anyways, so back to the actual product review.
The Naked Basics 2, as you can tell is one of 2 of Urban Decay’s Basics palettes.

Packaging and Eyeshadows

The Naked Basics 2 comes in a soft rubbery case that has a muted light brown colour to it. It consists of 6 eyeshadows ( 5 mattes and 1 that has a slightly satiny finish to it). This palette is quite cooled toned and I must admit that I didn’t think I would like it. I haven’t tried many cooled toned eyeshadows because I’ve just never been attracted to the colours but man, was I surprised by how beautiful these eyeshadows looked on my eyes.

This palettes colour scheme looks quite taupey. I like that there are 2 very light shades, 3 medium toned shades and 1 really dark shade. This makes it really easy for those who want a toned down day to day look.

Skimp, Stark, Frisk, Cover, Primal and Undone.

Colour Description:

  • Skimp – a satin pale peachy toned shade that is perfect as an inner corner or brow bone highlight or even if you’re going for a look with a light lid. I love that this specific shade has a satiny finish. I find that it applies better than the rest.
  • Stark – a matte peach light pinkish shade. This is another shade I use to apply all over my lid when I’m doing a look with darker shades in the outer corner and just want to brighten up the look ever so slightly. I do find this eyeshadow a bit dry and it doesn’t apply too well. Not sure if that is because it’s a matte shade.
  • Frisk – a cooled toned light brown colour. This is a very unique shade and perfect to use as a transition shade. This one is also a little dry and the colour payoff isn’t great. I always use an eyeshadow primer and find that this helps.
  • Cover – a muted taupey reddish brown shade. I know my description will at times sound strange but this is the best way I can describe them. lol! This is a stunning shade and probably the best matte in terms of formula, in this palette. It applies smoothly and another great transition shade.
  • Primal – a softened taupe brown. I really love this shade to just deepen the outer corner when I’m going for a light daytime look and it’s the perfect transition shade for a smokey eye.
  • Undone – A charcoal dark brown shade. I think this is a great alternative to a matte black shade and stunning to create a soft smokey eye. This eyeshadow is a little patchy and it’s quite noticeable on the arm swatches.

My experience with the Urban Decay Naked Basics 2:

I must say that after trying this palette that I’m more open to trying other cooler toned eyeshadows. The shades in this palette are quite unique and I love the way they look on my skin tone. I wasn’t completely blown away by the quality of these eyeshadows and felt that some of these were quite dry and chalky. It was a mission, with at least 3 of them, to get the colour to show and I was forced to pack it on and even then, it still seemed like it lacked “Umpf”.

These are some of the looks I’ve created using this palette.

I hope you’ve enjoyed reading this post. Do you own this palette and what are your thoughts on it?
Ps. Please stay tuned to the other 2 “Naked Edition” posts.

I sadly don’t own any UD eyeshadows. 😦 Such FOMO in life about it. lol. It seems like a nice compact palette for when you’re on the go. I find lugging around a chocolate bar palette to work to do my makeup is such a schlep, so something small like this is appealing.

Totally agree with regards to your review on the naked basics 2 palette. I find that the Ultimate basics palette is the same, some colors are chalky and need to be applied in many layers as it’s not as pigmented as the other palettes. Urban decay Naked 3 is my fav ♥️♥️♥️♥️
P.S Your fiancé is so sweet! Mine did the same thing when the Sandton and Menlyn store opened up. We should’ve met up while standing in that long queue for the Sandton opening 😹😹😹

I saw that a lady asked your thoughts on the urban decay goodies that you stocked up on the other day and was so happy when I read that we feel the same way about the naked basics 2 because I was worried I was the only one that felt this way.
Aaaw! We’re really blessed with the best babes! Treasure that guy! 💞 Lol! I know, we really should’ve. And I saw you while you were in the store because I still recall thinking, “OMG, she’s so beautiful”. 😍

Omg I didn’t see you at all you should’ve come say hi! lol and you’re way too nice for your own good! I looked like a hobo for the sandton store opening but it was all in the name of free makeup 😶
The menlyn store opening was amazing! Got there so much later and was one of the 1st 20 people unlike being 150 at the sandton opening and getting there at the crack of dawn 😹😹

Lol. I should’ve 🙈 haha! Babes you looked far from that. You’re a natural beauty and I doubt you have to try hard to look beautiful. And I really think you are ! 💞 Aaah man, I so badly wanted to go to the menlyn opening but this time around my fiancé was like “Nope” you’ve overspent this month 😂😂😂 hope you managed to grab a few stunning items 😘

That is rather disappointing because I have had my eye on this palette for quite some time. My favourite colours from the swatches are Cover, Primal and Undone, so I really hope those are not the shades you had to build up on:(. Regardless of my ambivalence to this palette now, I cannot dispute that the eye looks you have created looks incredible on you. I am on the fence now :).

Aaaw I’m sorry babes. 😔 Perhaps try and find one in another brand with similar shades? Cover and primal are 2 of the better shades. Undone is a little patchy but you just need a blend so if you don’t mind that then I suppose it’s ok! Thanks soo much love. I was quite surprised by how these looks turned out. I’ll be keeping this baby only because I really love the shades. Lol. 🙈
