My Favourite "Drugstore" Foundations

Hey Stunners
So I realised a few days ago, after picking my brain on what my next post will be about, that I haven’t written a foundation review blog post. I posted a picture on Instagram of two foundations I’m currently using and a few ladies wanted me to share my thoughts on these, so I figured this was the perfect opportunity to finally do a review. There are a few foundations I use for different occasions and the two I’ll be reviewing are the ones I’m currently using as my everyday foundations. They are considered drugstore because they’re not in the “high end” league. You will find these foundations in stores like CVS, Target and Walgreens, these are all US drugstores. For those of you who don’t know what a drugstore is like, just think of Dischem and Clicks, they are our major “drugstores”.
Maybelline&Milani
I usually do a little bit of reading and watch a few youtube videos before I purchase products and when I saw that both these were on Desi Perkins “Top Five favourite Foundations” I knew that they would be worth buying.
I’ll discuss each one separately and let you in on my final thoughts right at the end.

Maybelline Fit Me! Matte and Poreless foundation

Maybelline Fit me! Matte and Poreless

Claims

“Fit Me® Matte + Poreless Foundation face make-up. This lightweight foundation mattifies and refines pores and leaves a natural, seamless finish. Ideal for normal to oily skin, our exclusive matte foundation formula features micro-powders to control shine and blur pores. Pore minimizing foundation. Dermatologist tested. Allergy tested. Non-comedogenic.”

Packaging

This foundation comes in a glass bottle with 30ml of product. The bottle itself is pretty standard and the design is kept pretty simple. The one complaint I have is that it doesn’t have a pump.  I find it becomes quite tricky to pour the foundation onto the back of my hand and if a foundation is as liquidy as this specific one then it becomes soo messy.

I chose to take this picture as is so that you can see the bottle as well as how messy it can get

Formula and Coverage

It was a mission to find my shade, as is always the case with online purchases and I think it’s even more tricky with foundation purchases. Some of the online swatches aren’t true to colour because of the different light effects when the pictures were taken. I use the website called www.findation.com and I also follow a few youtube MUA who are in the same shade as me in M.A.C and Urban Decay. Just for reference, I’m in the shade NC41 in M.A.C Studio fix fluid and between 5.0 and 6.0 in the Urban Decay All Nighter foundation.
I went with the shade 228 – soft tan, I do however feel that this shade is a smidge darker for me but it’s not too noticeable. Nothing that a lighter powder can’t fix. I’m one of those people whose complexion changes over the seasons and this is so damn frustrating especially when it comes to foundation purchases.
Maybelline Fit me! Matte and poreless
The formula of this foundation is incredibly smooth and creamy which makes application quite easy. I like applying it using a buffing brush, I feel this blends it quite well and even though it claims to be a matte foundation it doesn’t really dry down to a complete flat matte. It gives a stunning satiny finish which I quite like. This foundation does claim to blur pores, I have a few tiny ones on my cheek area closest to my nose and I have to say, it sure does minimise the appearance of ones’ pores.

It is quite liquidy, so just be careful, I made quite a mess the first few times. The coverage is light to medium but I have tried building it up to achieve a more full coverage and it looked stunning, no cakiness at all. The only issue at the moment is that the shade is slightly too dark for me because I am at my lightest during autumn/winter and I find that when I build it up that it sort of darkens and it looks a little strange. Hopefully, this won’t be the case come Spring and Summer. Will update you guys on this.

Milani Conceal + Perfect 2-in-1 Foundation + Concealer

Milani Conceal + Perfect

Claims

” Combat under-eye circles, redness and other skin imperfections with this full coverage, water-resistant foundation plus concealer in one. A no mess, no drip pump dispenses just the amount of fluid needed to achieve a flawless look and works around the clock to keep skin looking naturally perfect!”

Packaging

This foundation also comes in a glass bottle with 30ml of product. The best part of the packaging is that it has a pump that makes dispensing a small amount of product very easy. When I received the product I couldn’t help but think that the pump looked almost exactly like the Catrice Nude Illusion foundations pump. They did ok with the design on the bottle, you can’t go wrong with black and gold.

Formula and Coverage

I also bought this baby online and experienced the same struggles as with the Maybelline Fit and Poreless foundation. I swear it took me about a week to finally decide on a shade and it was so “stressful” because they were selling so fast. LOL! Makeup Addicts would totally understand what this feels like. I finally decided to go with Warm Beige 05 and this was a great match for my skintone.

The texture is quite thick especially if you compare it to the Maybelline Fit and Poreless. It blends well and gives a medium to high coverage with a semi-matte/satiny finish that is absolutely stunning. I’ve applied it with a dense brush, a buffing brush, as well as a beauty sponge but I prefer applying it with the buffing brush because it gives a gorgeous natural finish. It really gives amazing coverage and the best part is how lightweight it feels on the skin.

Final Thoughts

I’m so glad I came across these two foundations because they really are amazing everyday foundations that give great coverage and the finishes are stunning. I must add that I always set my foundation because of my oily t-zone and I use the RCMA no colour powder. I find that I can get a good 4 hours of wear with the Maybelline Fit and Poreless before my oils around my t-zone starts shining through. The Milani 2 in 1 wears a little better and I can get about 6-8 hours in before needing to touch up.  These foundations are unfortunately not available in South Africa stores but you can purchase them from Samika, this is where I bought mine from. They both retail for R300 excluding delivery.
If you have a normal/combination to oily skin type then you will absolutely love these foundations.
Let me know if you have tried them and what your experience has been thus far?
Toodles Stunners! Xx

Great review! I have my eye on the Milani foundation. I’m just struggling to pick a shade 😔 sigh. It would be so much easier if we had Milani in our drugstores. Xx

Thanks soo much love. Let me know if you need some help with choosing a shade. A fellow blogger and I might be able to help you. I know, right? Sucks soo much! Thanks again for taking the time to read my post. Mwah! Xx

  • misspretorius

The Milani one looks quite interesting as I’m currently using Estee Lauder DW but it doesn’t give coverage to the few pigmentation marks I have. I suck at choosing colours online as I usually imagine myself darker than I am (because of Summer) but will browse to see which one is the closest.Great review babe

    • stunnersslayuniqueness

You will love the Milani. It isn’t as full coverage as EL though. So if you’re looking for one that’s better than you’ll be disappointed. Lol. I haven’t found a foundation that’s as high coverage as EL. But try it out and see how you feel. Visit that website I added to the post to see what your match is and let me know and I’ll try and help where I can. Always great to try out different foundations. Thanks for reading it babe. Xx

  • An Ordinary Gal

I wish I saw this post an hour ago! I just purchased the Milani in shade 6 (Sand Beige) now I’m worried it may be too dark. I’m also Cashew in EL, but I do think it’s a bit too warm for me. What do you think? I do think you’re a smidgen fairer than I am though.

    • stunnersslayuniqueness

I think shade 6 should be fine babes. I also feel cashew is a little too warm for me and yes you are slightly darker than me. Maaaan fingers crossed tightly that Sand beige. Please let me know how it goes once you receive it

      • An Ordinary Gal

Will do! My cousin is bringing it from the UK, so fingers crossed.
I usually mix Cashew with a much lighter L’oreal foundation I have. Worst case scenario, I don’t need to bronze my face. lol. Will make it work. Thanks for replying…was feeling a bit stressed.

        • stunnersslayuniqueness

Oooh lucky lady. Let me know what else you manage to buy from the UK. I don’t own cashew,I tried out a sample for 2 weeks but I felt because it’s a little too warm that I would need lightening drops and I wasn’t willing to invest in it at that time buy definitely worth considering. I can’t wait for your review on the milani once you’ve tried it 😘

          • An Ordinary Gal

Same here, also have the sample and I end up mixing it with a lighter shade. The sales lady tried to get me to buy the bottle immediately, and I was like…what’s the sample for??? Hell no.
Lovely coverage though. I think I need to try the neutral one vs the warm one. Not sure what the shade name is.
I just got some RCMA powder, Gerard cosmetics setting spray (coconut cause #obsessed with coconut) and the lactic acid from The Ordinary. In total R700 for the 4 products. Not bad me thinks.

          • stunnersslayuniqueness

The struggle with foundation shades, continue! 🙈
I think I’ll try the lightening drops because I tried 3 shades with cashew being the last one and cashew although a little warm, was the closest to my skin tone. So I’ll just have to make it work.
Oh wow! R700? That’s a score babes! I luuurve the rcma powder and I tried the gerard setting spray in peach when I visited nisa and OMG, I NEED it!!! You’re gonna love the lactic acid. Did you get the 5% or 10%?
